چکیده

The relatively stable conditions of the sea ice cover in Antarctic, observed for almost 40 years, seem to be changing recently. Therefore, it is essential provide thickness (SIT) and volume (SIV) estimates order anticipate potential multi-scale changes Antarctic ice. For that purpose, main objectives this work are: (1) assess a new freeboard, altimetry dataset over 2003–2020 (2) identify first impacts recent conditions. To produce these series, we use neuronal network calibrate Envisat radar freeboards onto CryoSat-2 (CS2). This method addresses surface roughness on Low Resolution Mode (LRM) measurements. During 2011 common flight period, found mean deviation between by about 0.5 cm. Using Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) dual-frequency Altimetric Snow Depth (ASD) data, our solutions are compared with Upward looking sonar (ULS) draft some in-situ measurement SIMBA campaign, total 6 Operation Ice Bridge (OIB) missions ICESat-2 freeboards. Over 2003–2020, global freeboard decreased −14% per decade SIT SIV −10% (considering snow depth climatology). marked slight increase through 2015, which directly followed strong decrease 2016. Thereafter, generally remained low even continued regions such as Weddell sea. Considering 2013–2020 ASD data available, −40% decade. −60% After 2016, values contrast extent has rather increased again, reaching near-average winter 2020. regional analysis underlines thinning (from 2016) occurs all except Amundsen-Bellingshausen sector. Meanwhile, reversal trends from may signature significant ongoing

Laser altimetry sampling strategies over sea ice

With the conclusion of the science phase of the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) mission in late 2009, and the planned launch of ICESat-2 in late 2015, NASA has recently established the IceBridge program to provide continuity between missions. A major goal of IceBridge is to obtain a sea-ice thickness time series via airborne surveys over the Arctic and Southern Oceans. Typicall...

Interpretation of recent Antarctic sea ice variability

[1] Trends in the satellite-derived Antarctic sea ice concentrations (1979–2002) show pronounced increase (decrease) in the central Pacific sector (Bellingshausen/ western Weddell sector) by 4–10% per decade. Confidence levels for these regional trends exceed 95%. Positive polarities of the Antarctic Oscillation (AAO) lead to more (less) ice in the eastern Ross/Amundsen sector (Bellingshausen/n...

The Impact of Geophysical Corrections on Sea-Ice Freeboard Retrieved from Satellite Altimetry

Satellite altimetry is the only method to monitor global changes in sea-ice thickness and volume over decades. Such missions (e.g., ERS, Envisat, ICESat, CryoSat-2) are based on the conversion of freeboard into thickness by assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. Freeboard, the height of the ice above the water level, is therefore a crucial parameter. Freeboard is a relative quantity, computed by sub...

Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) over Arctic sea ice: Retrieval of freeboard

[1] Total freeboard (snow and ice) of the Arctic Ocean sea ice cover is derived using Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) data from two 35-day periods: one during the fall (October November) of 2005 and the other during the winter (February March) of 2006. Three approaches are used to identify near-sea-surface tiepoints. Thin ice or open water samples in new openings, typically wi...

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Variability and Its Global Connectivity

This study statistically evaluates the relationship between Antarctic Sea Ice extent and global climate variability. Temporal cross-correlations between detrended Antarctic sea ice edge (SIE) anomaly and various climate indices are calculated. For the sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern equatorial Pacific and tropical Indian Ocean, as well as the tropical Pacific precipitation, a coher...
